Having completed thousands of notarizations, I’ve come across just about every situation. Mistakes are common and it is my job to ensure your documents are always accurate and properly executed. Here are many of the situations I’ve encountered that can be avoided:
Failing to sign the document in the presence of the notary: I must witness you signing the document. If you sign the document before our meeting, I won’t be able to notarize it.
Failing to bring proper identification: In California, I need to verify the identify of the person signing the document. If you do not bring the proper identification, I will not be able to notarize the document.
Filling out the document incorrectly: Any errors or omissions on the document can render it invalid, and, once again, I will not be able to notarize it. Make sure to carefully read and fill out the document before meeting with me.
Failing to provide witnesses when required: In some cases, usually for out-of-state properties such as Florida, witnesses need to be present to confirm the identity of the person signing the document. If witnesses are required and not provided, I am unable to proceed with the notarization.
Waiting until the last minute: Us notaries go through high volume and low volume days, many times it can be unpredictable. Waiting until the last minute is not advised, but sometimes it just happens. In general, always try to plan ahead and schedule an appointment with me the moment you know you’ll need something notarized.
Failing to disclose relevant information: If there are any relevant facts or circumstances that I need to be aware of, such as the person signing the document being under duress or not mentally competent, it is important to disclose this information to me. Failing to do so can result in legal issues down the line.
It is unlikely you’ll run into any of these issues working with me! Having encountered these situations, I know well in advance how to handle them and make sure your signing goes smoothly without any problems. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
